Strange, but interesting. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Google launched what it calls “Dyanmic Views” for its blogging platform Blogger, which gives users seven new ways to display their blogs. <br />The seven views are: Classic, Flipcard, Magazine, Mosaic, Sidebar, Snapshot and Timeslide.“Dynamic Views is much more than just new templates,” says Google software engineer Antin Harasymiv. “With just a couple clicks, you’ll get infinite scrolling (say goodbye to the “Older posts” link), images that load as you browse, integrated search, sorting by date, label and author, lightbox-style posts for easy viewing, keyboard shortcuts for quickly flipping through posts, and one-click sharing to Google+ and other social sites on every post.”<br />“No two blogs are the same, so you can choose from seven different views that display text and photos differently,” Harasymiv says. “For example, if you have lots of photos on your blog, you may prefer Flipcard or Snapshot. If your blog is more text-heavy, then Classic, Sidebar (what you’re seeing now on Blogger Buzz) or Timeslide may be preferable. Issues with media conversion and a lack of playback control has hamstrung the Android operating system, something an article from 2008 demonstrates.</div><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">When it comes to supporting various media files, the VLC Media Player is a man among boys, offering one of the most thorough levels of media support, thanks to multitude of codecs VLC includes in its media player.  With that in mind, an effort to bring the VLC Media Player’s robust level of file to the Android environment is underway, as discussed in an article by Geek.com.  According to Geek.com, developer Austen Dicken is fast at work on adopting VLC for the Android operating system, and if successful, it will make the device one of the more powerful media players in the mobile industry:</div><blockquote style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><i>Austen describes his work on VLC for Android to be pre-alpha at this point in time, but he is still able to show some impressive results regarding basic functionality. Result Declared for TET 2011

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">The result was declared today at the office of the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur by the Principle Secretary, Education (S), Dr J Sureshbabu and Secretary, BSEM, L Rajmohan in front of the media persons.<br /><br />Out of the 26,274 candidates who appeared in Paper I test, 10,220 candidates passed.<br /><br />The pass percentage was 37.90 %.<br /><br />And out of the 15,680 candidates who appeared in the Paper II test, 7,107 candidates were able to get through, with the pass percentage at 45.32% .<br /><br />Addressing media persons on the occasion, Dr Sureshbabu said that the TET certificates of the successful candidates will be given out by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur within 4-5 days.<br /><br />The successful candidates will have to bring their admit cards along with the other required documents while coming to get their certificates.<br /><br />He further said that since the TET results have been declared, the notification for the recruitment of 2700 primary teachers under SSA will also be issued on first week of October.<br /><br />Only TET passed candidates will be illegible for the recruitment.<br /><br />The recruitment process will be done  purely on merit basis with 50% of the marks scored in TET and another 50% from the candidate's academic performance will be considered.<br /><br />He said that there is strict rule that a teacher should possess both TET and B Ed certificates.<br /><br />But since Manipur is a state where there is less numbers of trained teachers, it has been decided by the central government to relax the eligibility criteria of teachers in the state restricting only to TET certificates and not B Ed certificates, after request from the state government.<br /><br />The decision came after a notification was issued by the Central government.<br /><br />It further said the candidates holding only TET certificates will be allowed to appear in the recruitment process of teachers only upto 2013.Beyond that, candidates applying for the post of teachers will have to hold both TET and B Ed certificates.<br /><br />He further said that an order will shortly be issued where recruitment of teachers even in private schools will also require the TET certificates.</span></div></div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">At the booth on the show floor of the IDF 2011 conference, I had spoken to several Intel representatives about the company’s efforts to break into the Android market. Intel reps had revealed a couple interesting tidbits about the chip-maker’s relationship with Google, its efforts with Honeycomb and smartphones, and plans for Medfield Atom-based Android devices in terms of performance.<br /><br />According to those representatives, Intel is one of few companies that was given access to the Google Android Honeycomb source code–which Google has to this date not made public yet because the company is still optimizing Honeycomb for future phone releases–and it took Intel a few weeks to re-compile the code to make it compatible for its x86 architecture–the code was originally written for ARM chipsets. Moreover, one representative from Intel’s Software and Services Group noted that security around Honeycomb was so strict that Google barred anyone at Intel from taking the code off of Intel’s campus(es). If an Intel engineer had to work from home, that employee was prohibited from taking his work home on a memory drive and the employee must work remotely by logging into a remote desktop software to access his work computer that way.<br /><br /><br />As far as Atom for Android, Intel was showing off a prototype hardware running its Intel Atom 670 processor at the booth, based on the Oak Trail platform.<br /><br />The company is promising that a 32 nm Medfield processor will be coming in 2012 that will deliver enhanced performance and lower power consumption. with Medfield, Intel says that the chipset will be able to both record (encode) and decode 1080p HD videos natively on the tablet. Currently, Oak Trail is limited to 720p HD encoding and decoding, according to one Intel engineer from the SSG group.<br /><br />I had spent some hands-on time with the Oak Trail-based tablet, which was shown outside of the glass display, and Intel says that it has gotten Android to work with Atom for software acceleration, but not hardware acceleration. The two companies are working together to ensure that hardware acceleration will be optimized in the future to ensure smooth performance and graphics. Intel says that the embedded graphics on Atom would be used and that there won’t be a discrete graphics option. That said, even with software acceleration, apps like Opera and Google Body work beautifully on the Oak Trail tablet, though there’s a lot more to be desired with other apps and the performance of Android Honeycomb in general without hardware acceleration at this point.<br /><br />The company was not specific as to when the Medfield chipset would be shipping, but promised that phones and tablets should start appearing with Medfield and Android in early 2012. With the 32 nm manufacturing process, a similar Atom processor was shown on a Windows 8 tablet as well.<br /><br />The Medfield prototype android Honeycomb was shown only behind glass running a slideshow of pictures. Performance seems good and the display looks very crisp and beautiful, similar to the smooth screen on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.<br /><br />Speaking of Windows, a benefit, according to Intel, of having an Atom CPU is that it would give OEMs more flexibility to deliver multi-boot solutions. For instance, tablet-makers could deliver a tablet that could both run Android Honeycomb and Windows 8, for example, though that capability may be left to manufacturers or the hacking community to implement.<br /><br />An interesting thing about power is that Medfield would be the first chip, according to an Intel rep, that would deliver comparable battery life to ARM-based chips today.</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">A good starting point for planning the future of your website is to analyze what you already have. To some extent we are doing this all the time. That is how new projects happen. However, a more formal approach helps to better inform your decision-making throughout the web project.<br />There are two ways to better understand your current website: qualitative and quantitative.<br />Qualitative feedback is received by requesting comment from stakeholders and users.<br />This is traditionally gathered using the following techniques:<br /><table class="textile"><tbody><tr><th scope="row">Techniques</th><th scope="row">Description</th></tr><tr><td>Stakeholder interviews</td><td>The role of stakeholder interviews is to provide those being interviewed the opportunity to comment on the existing website. These comments should be collated for later analysis.</td></tr><tr><td>Feedback mechanisms</td><td>Allow visitors the opportunity to comment on your site using contact us forms, polls, and surveys.</td></tr><tr><td>User testing</td><td>Watching visitors use your existing site can be very enlightening. It is a powerful way to identify problems in the usability of your site.</td></tr></tbody></table>Quantitative analysis on the other hand draws upon various automated analytical tools that provide information on different aspects of your site’s performance. These include:<br /><table class="textile"><tbody><tr><th scope="row">Tools</th><th scope="row">Description</th></tr><tr><td>Web logs analyzers</td><td>Every time a user interacts with your website information about that interaction is stored. Analysis of these logs can help identify areas of improvement.</td></tr><tr><td>Automated performance checkers</td><td>Automated checkers assess things like accessibility, download times, and browser support. These help maximize your audience.</td></tr><tr><td>Online visibility trackers</td><td>Having a great site is important, but if nobody knows it exists then it has failed. There are a number of ways to gain an understanding of how visible your site is online.</td></tr></tbody></table>Let’s look in more detail at these two approaches and better understand the role of each.<br /><h2>Qualitative feedback</h2>We’ll now take a moment to focus on other feedback mechanisms.<br />Most websites provide some method by which users can submit feedback. This is normally a contact page. However, a contact form is a passive approach and something more proactive is needed if you want user feedback. The majority of users will not think to send in comments unless they are frustrated with your site. The problem is that in such situations they tend to simply leave rather than complain.<br />If you want feedback on your site then specifically ask for it. This can be done with a simple feedback form or a more comprehensive survey. However, a word of warning if you are considering a full-blown survey. Few users take the time to complete a long survey, so keep your questions to a minimum. Also avoid making your requests for feedback too intrusive. They should not hinder a user from completing his or her goals.<br /><span class="pullquote">If you are considering making changes to an existing site, it is well worth implementing a basic feedback mechanism to canvas opinion before you begin.</span> Whether you are getting feedback from your site through user testing or via stakeholder interviews it is necessary to assess the value of the comments made. When analyzing negative comments about your site, use these four criteria to judge how seriously those comments need to be <br />taken:<br /><ul><li>How often the comment is being made?</li><li>Who makes the comment?</li><li>What effect the problem has on the user and your objectives for the site?</li><li>How easy the problem is to fix?</li></ul><img alt="" src="http://www.digital-web.com/extras/know_your_site/adobe.png" /><br />Adobe support provides a simple and yet unobtrusive feedback mechanism. The side column asks users if they found the support document useful.<br />The more often you are hearing the same negative comment, the more likely it is that the comment is justified and needs addressing. However, you cannot rely on numbers alone. If your biggest customer has a problem then you had better address that concern fast!<br />There is also a need to ascertain the seriousness of a problem. Does it stop the user from completing a task or is it simply a mild inconvenience? Does it in some way hamper a business objective? If it does then it will need addressing.<br />Finally, establish how difficult the problem is to fix. Even a minor problem is worth fixing if it is easy to do. Conversely, fixing a major problem might be unjustifiable if the expense is prohibitive. In such situations, look for a workaround that lessens the seriousness of the issue.<br />Ultimately these decisions are about return on investment. Does the seriousness of the problem justify the cost of fixing it?<br />Although nothing is better than feedback from your users, it can be a battle. Stakeholder interviews and user testing are time consuming, while site feedback mechanisms are often ignored. Fortunately, quantitative analysis is much less work. However, it should only be used to support qualitative feedback—not as a replacement.<br /><h3>Free survey service</h3>Providing a method that allows user feedback does not have to be expensive or complicated. There are a number of services, such as questionform.com that allow you to create free surveys in minutes.<br /><img alt="" src="http://www.digital-web.com/extras/know_your_site/questionform.png" /><br /><h2>Quantitative Analysis</h2>I am bad at assembling flat-pack furniture. Part of my problem is that I never have the right tools. Fortunately when it comes to analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of your site, there is no shortage of tools.<br />Let’s look at the three types of analytical tools I mentioned earlier, starting with web logs.<br /><h3>Web Logs Analyzers</h3>The most well known form of analysis is carried out on a site’s log files. Log files track where a user has come from, what pages they have visited, how long they have spent on each page, and other data on users’ interaction with your site.<br />The problem is that log files are hard to understand. There are many tools available to help with this, from free open-source software to expensive enterprise-level products.<br />It is probably best to start with something cheap and cheerful. In my experience the majority of website owners won’t use the advanced features offered by high-end tools. You can always upgrade later.<br />Another option is to use a statistics collector that doesn’t rely on log files. One such tool is Google Analytics. This collects considerably more data than web logs, and has an easy to use interface for analyzing the results. It is free of charge and only requires a small piece of code on each page to work. <br /><img alt="" src="http://www.digital-web.com/extras/know_your_site/analytics.png" /><br />So, how do you judge if an existing site is performing? There are three basic things you can look at:<br /><ul><li><strong>The number of unique users and where they are coming from.</strong> If many sites are linking to you, it is a good indication that you are doing something right. Traffic levels also indicate the performance of existing marketing campaigns.</li><li><strong>The percentage of repeat visitors compared to first time users.</strong> If users are returning to your site regularly it is normally a sign of satisfaction.</li><li><strong>How users are moving around your site.</strong> How long are they spending on individual pages? How many pages are they viewing? Which page are they leaving the site from?</li></ul>The final test is trickier to interpret. For example a user might visit many pages, which could appear to be a sign of interest in the site. Alternatively, it could mean they cannot find the information they require. Instead, compare the time on site to the number of pages viewed. If they are looking at a good number of pages for a reasonable time then you know things are going well.<br />By looking at where a user leaves, you can sometimes get an indication of potential problems. Are users just looking at your homepage and then leaving? If they are leaving without viewing other pages then you have a problem with your homepage. Are users getting to checkout on your ecommerce website and then giving up? Perhaps it’s time to user-test your checkout process.<br />There is a lot more you can do with web stats, but that should be enough for you to analyze you existing site.<br />Let’s now turn our attention to automated checkers.<br /><h3>Automated Performance Checkers</h3>Sometimes when analyzing your web stats you will notice a significant number of users who leave your site after only viewing a single page. This can happen for a variety of reasons. For example, they may have simply come to the wrong site. However, it could also be because they have met technical difficulties accessing your site.<br />There are three tests you can easily perform to identify any potential problems.<br /><ul><li><strong>Check your site on as many different browsers as possible.</strong> I recommend you look at your site in at least the last two versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. If you do not have access to all of these browsers then consider using an online service such as browsershots.org.</li><li><strong>Check your site’s accessibility using an online accessibility checker.</strong> These tools provide a report outlining the various accessibility problems with your site. However, a word of warning; these automated accessibility reports can be both misleading and confusing. Nevertheless, they can help you identify possible accessibility problem with your site.</li><li><strong>Carry out a speed test on your site.</strong> You should be looking for download times of less than 10 seconds on a 56k modem. However, up to 20 seconds is acceptable. Automated checkers have a broader role than monitoring site performance. They can also be used to track the online visibility of your site.</li></ul><h3>Online Visibility Trackers</h3>Web stats and performance checkers provide information on site usability and accessibility, but they don’t tell you how easy your site is to find. Fortunately there are tools that do exactly that. Start with a site like popuri.us.<br />Popuri.us is a free web application that allows you to check your site’s ranking on search engines, blog listings, and even social networking applications. The site checks various sources to ascertain your online visibility.<br />If you want information about your site’s ranking for specific search terms, then a tool like GoogleRankings.com will help. Despite the name, this free application checks all major search engines, reporting your rankings for whatever terms you specify.<br />There are also a number of desktop tools that bring all of this functionality (and more) together. However, for the purposes of assessing an existing site, the free online tools will be adequate. You need to monitor your site’s visibility on an ongoing basis, especially when tracking marketing campaigns. In this situation a desktop application may be more convenient.<br />Of course, knowing that your site ranks 4653 on Alexa or that 364 people link to it from del.icio.us, isn’t in itself that useful. The real power of online visibility trackers is that you are not limited to checking your own website. You can check on your competition as well.</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Those of you familiar with Andrew King’s previous book, Speed Up Your Site: Web Site Optimization, might assume that this latest offering, Website Optimization: Speed, Search Engine & Conversion Rate Secrets, is simply an update and refresh of the earlier book. However, this is not the case.<br /><br /><span class="pullquote">This time around, King isn’t referring to “optimization” strictly in the speed and efficiency sense of the word</span>—instead, in this book King focuses more on how to optimize the overall effectiveness of your web presence, looking at search engine positioning and marketing your site in addition to speeding up its performance. The book’s preface begins with two quotes about hypothetical websites: “We’ve had a website for years now, and it hardly pays for itself,” and “Our site’s pulling in more than 30% of revenue, at a far lower cost than our other venues.” Throughout the book, he describes techniques and strategies that should help a site’s impact mirror the latter quote much more than the former.<br /><h2>What you’ll learn</h2>The book is organized into two main parts. The first part covers search engine visibility and the marketing aspects of site optimization, explaining how to best go about making sure that a site is positioned highly in search engines, and making sure that users stay on your site once they’ve arrived.<br />In the first chapter of this section, King details how to improve a site’s positioning in search engines’ natural, unpaid results. Citing research that demonstrates that the majority of people don’t scan search engine result pages much beyond the first few sites, he provides simple steps to help sites reach these valued top spots. These tips focus on tools and techniques to help discover productive keywords and key phrases, how to construct pages that will place highly for searches for these words, and tips to help generate inbound links from other sites.<br />Another chapter in this section provides a thorough discussion of pay-per-click (PPC) advertising with services like Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing. King starts with a brief summary of the similarities and differences of the most prevalent PPC programs, and then provides a thorough methodology and detailed, quantitative metrics to assist in maximizing the return on one’s investment in these programs.<br />Each of the aforementioned chapters is followed by a case study where the concepts previously covered are put into practice. These sections do a good job of showing the process of employing the procedures outlined and how they can make a significant positive impact on a website.<br />Having a highly visible site does little good unless one can convert visitors to customers, though. King concludes the book’s first section with a chapter providing tips to enhance a site’s conversion rate, including suggestions on how to increase a site’s apparent credibility; giving important content a good, prominent position on the page; and writing engaging copy that uses persuasive language.<br />In the second section of the book, King concerns himself with outlining steps to make sites as responsive as possible. After noting the continued importance speed plays in user’s perceptions, he notes that even with the continually decreasing proportion of users with narrowband connections we still must pay attention to how quickly pages load. He does note, however, that with the increasing number of people on fast connections, small files sizes are less important than addressing the latency involved with loading a large number of objects on each page or employing emerging technologies such as Ajax.<br />With this new emphasis on reduced latency, he outlines strategies to limit the number of object requests by giving tips on compressing and minimized the number of CSS and script files associated with a web page. Techniques to employ multiple domains to get around most browser limitations of two simultaneous downloads per hostname and delaying script loading to improve perceived load time are also discussed. He also discusses how to effectively employ HTTP compression and caching. Finally, he talks about how content delivery networks, like Akamai, geographically distribute servers.<br />King ends the book with a chapter detailing metrics to measure the effect of one’s optimization efforts. Among the topics covered is the use of log analysis to ascertain the effectiveness of marketing efforts, and tools like YSlow and IBM Page Detailer to test a site’s response and load times.<br /><h2>Who is this book for</h2>The book is intended for three distinct audiences: Web marketers, developers, and managers (project managers, site owners, etc.), and this book certainly has useful content specific to each of these groups. While some topics, like confidence interval testing pay-per-click ads (complete with mathematical formulae), are covered more thoroughly than others, this is to be expected in a book that covers as many separate topics as this one does. Additionally, King also provides ample footnotes throughout the book that provide avenues for further exploration of some of the less thoroughly covered topics.<br />The book will also prove useful to those wishing to learn a little about aspects of site optimization that is outside of their domain of expertise. For example, a reader whose background is mostly centered on marketing might very well be interested in the technological site enhancements that can positively impact marketing goals; and the same could be said for technologists interested in how their skills can best be used to improve a site’s business objectives. The book’s case studies will be especially useful for these readers, since they show how each of the aspects of web site optimization tie together.<br /><h2>Conclusion</h2>Website Optimization will prove useful to anyone interested in increasing the visibility, responsiveness, and profitability of their website. King provides a solid overview of tips and strategies that are focused on improving a site’s performance, as well as the tools and techniques used to implement these strategies and measure the positive impact that they will have on your site.<br /></div>

However, it isn't the fastest device around, and neither is it the sleekest. It also debuts with Froyo (Android 2.2). Spending Rs. 37k (MRP) on this doesn't make sense, especially when there are other options available albeit without 3D. Why? – excellent colour, with only very minor gradation of colours (at times), great brightness levels, fast moving scenes in videos are smoother than most other high-end smartphones (maybe because this display has a quicker refresh rate, don’t really know) and the depth of the 3D content was actually surprising, in a good way. The 3D Zone mentioned earlier contains all 3D content – games, movies and access to the 3D camera.</div><div align="JUSTIFY"><br /></div><div align="JUSTIFY">Before we get back to 3D and its performance, let us look at some of the other features. The ARM Cortex-A9 dual core 1GHz processor and the PowerVR SGX540 graphics power this 3D smartphone. However, we were a bit amazed (and subsequently a bit disappointed) to find that there is only 512MB of RAM to complement this processor. The 8GB of built-in storage can be added to via the microSD card route, up to 32GB. For the photography enthusiasts out there, a smartphone may not always be the best device, but the dual 5MP cameras do have some powerful capabilities – 1080p @ 30fps for 2D videos and 720p @ 30fps for 3D videos. And yes, it takes 3D pictures too! The mini HDMI out port will let you connect to any 3D television as well to enjoy 3D on a bigger display.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a class="highslide" href="http://www.thinkdigit.com/FCKeditor/uploads/DSC_7990%281%29.jpg"><br /></a></div><div align="JUSTIFY">The LG 3D UI wrapped around Android is basically an updated version of the one we saw on the Optimus 2X with a slightly tweaked look. The Optimus 3D comes pre-loaded with Android 2.2, and frankly with 2.3 becoming pretty much de facto on phones, this retro step is a bit of a puzzle.</div><div align="JUSTIFY"> More on the 3D feature – LG has addressed one of the biggest complaints against the entire 3D experience - it is too complicated and uncomfortable. The Optimus 3Ds 3D display functions without glasses i.e. the display is auto-stereoscopic, and to be honest works quite well. However, as with auto-stereoscopic technology that is still in its infancy, using this display in 3D mode for long periods of time (say above 30 minutes) will cause headaches and sometimes a nauseous feeling. Incidentally, you can most formats of 3D video files on to the Optimus 3D and it will play them.
