<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Google announced a new software update for Google TV aimed at reaching four goals: keeping things simple, making it easier to find something worth watching, making YouTube better on TV, and bringing more apps to TV. “We look forward to announcing more hardware and chipset partnerships in the months ahead and shipping new devices at new price points in 2012,” a Google spokesperson tells WebProNews. “The initial version of Google TV wasn’t perfect, but launching it gave us the opportunity to learn. These are still early days, and we’re working hard to move forward with each update,” Google says in a blog post discussing the new update. “We also worked to put in place some fundamental components that will make more frequent and more powerful software updates a reality,” the company says. “We know it will take time to get it right — this is a marathon, not a sprint — and with each update, we take another step forward.” The update itself comes with a simpler interface and a customizable home screen (pictured above) designed to let users get to their favorite content more quickly. There are also shortcuts within “all apps,” like with Android. There are search improvements for both live TV and apps like Netflix, YouTube, HBO GO, etc. Along with that, there’s an app called “TV & Movies” that lets you browse through as many as 80,000 movies and TV episodes across cable/satellite and web services. There have been various reports about upcoming YouTube channels to be more TV-friendly, and it looks like that is a part of this update too. “We’re launching a new YouTube experience specifically built for Google TV,” Google says in the blog post. “It is now fast and easy to get to your favorite HD-quality YouTube entertainment. And we’ve integrated YouTube more closely with Google TV search, so that you can turn virtually any topic – mountain biking, cooking, etc. – into a channel.” On the apps front, Google is now letting Android developers bring existing mobile apps or entirely new apps to Google TV. Google started this in association with the UK’s Citizen’s Advice Bureau. Privacy policies and terms of service can often be long, complex and legalistic. Goal of the Good To Know campaign is to provide people with practical guidance, like how to select a safe password or keep their online accounts secure. The new Good to Know website builds on the commitment to explaining things in simple language. The in-depth resources are still there, but google hope a one-stop-shop resource will make this information more accessible for everyone. Good to Know contains tips to:     * Stay safe online: Advice for staying more secure on the web and an overview of some of the security tools that Google offers.     * Your data on the web and how it makes websites more useful: An overview of ways that websites can get to know your preferences and how this makes them more useful for you.     *       Your data on Google and how it makes Google services more useful: This section explains what information you share with Google when you use our products and services and how we use it to make your experience better.     * Manage your data and what you share with websites and Google: Guidance on how you can manage the data you share online, both across the web and on Google services. Five tips for online safety:    1. Pick a strong password. One idea you can try is to choose a line from your favourite song, film or play, like “To be or not to be, that is the question”. Then use numbers, symbols and letters to recreate it: “2bon2btitq” is a password with quadrillions of variations. The more unusual the phrase you choose the better.    2. Never reply to suspicious e-mails with your personal or financial information, and never enter your password after following a link from an e-mail that you don’t trust.    3. We saw the Ferrari engineers assemble cars for both Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. We discovered in detail the workings of the pit lane garage and how the team of engineers piece together a complex chain of events which result in the most exhaustive bit of teamwork in sports. In the Ferrari Garage we ran into Scuderia Ferrari's chief techie, Andrea Beneventi. His official designation is Head of Electronics for Track and Test and Head of Support for Electronic Applications, and he gave us a deep insight into the technological aspects of Scuderia Ferrari's F1 enterprise. Communication is key:  This is pretty much a well-known fact but the level the Ferrari team takes this to is almost unheard of.  Apparently real-time Telemetry is shared between the car and the Ferrari Garage in the pit lane and between the factory in Maranello. Now how does this happen? This happens via Controller Area Network (CAN) lines and Ethernet lines.  The CAN lines are connected to RF arrays, which are in turn connected to a series of antennae placed throughout the circuit enabling wireless real-time telemetry to the garage. From here, the engineers can change the programme parameters of the car.  For the link up between the track server and Maranello, Ferrari uses Multiprotocol Label Switching Network (MPLS), which enables very high data, transfer speeds of upto 6 MegaBits/ second. In fact, the guys in Maranello even have access to the communication between the drivers and the pit-lane engineers. By the way, CAN is an automotive protocol which is even used in our regular vehicles. According to Beneventi, the team collects about 2 to 3 GB of data for one car over the course of a race weekend, which is stored in the main server in the pit garage This also automatically synchronizes with Ferrari's mainframe back in Maranello over their MPLS network. Research and Development Coupled with Innovation: Ever since 2008, the FIA has brought about stringent Electronic Control Unit protocols, where all performance related enhancements remain constant for all constructors, and only car management ECUs can be custom built by the constructors. This has resulted in a situation where some of the richer constructors like Ferrari do not gain performance advantages due to their financial might where their car development budgets could sky rocket, but this situation does leave minimal wiggle room for constructors to innovate on F1 technologies. According to Beneventi, this is not an entirely bad thing: while it does slash budgets, it also forces the team to innovate on different technologies. For instance, an F1 car is fitted with an Apotation Meter, which is basically a sensor that helps the engineers monitor the positioning of various components inside the car.  With the new rules, Ferrari makes its F1 cars on almost 1/4th of the budget that it used to, which led the team to develop a brand new technology from scratch for the Apotation Meter as there previous technology would not fit in the budget. In spite of the new budgetary restrictions, Beneventi mentions the newer generation Ferrari F1 cars are equipped with far more sophisticated gadgetry than their predecessors, which were developed on higher budgets. Samsung, the world's biggest technology firm in terms of revenue, on Friday said net profit for July to September fell to 3.442 trillion won ($3.086 billion) from 4.455 trillion a year earlier, mainly due to weaker flat-panel screen sales as a global economic slowdown took hold. The world's largest maker of memory chips and flat-screen displays had recorded a higher net profit of 3.506 trillion won in the second quarter. Third-quarter operating profit was 4.252 trillion won, down 12.6 percent, and revenue was 41.273 trillion, up 2.6 percent from a year earlier, it said. Those figures were in line with the firm's earnings guidance issued earlier this month. The company said its telecoms businesses achieved record quarterly sales of 14.9 trillion won, up 37 percent from the previous year, with growth mainly driven by strong sales of Galaxy smartphones. Operating profit for the businesses -- which include mobile sales and telecommunication systems -- also hit a record 2.52 trillion won. Samsung vice president Robert Yi said in a statement the company achieved a solid quarterly performance despite the slowdown in developed markets, thanks partly to strong smartphone sales. Samsung Electronics overtook its main rival Apple in the third quarter to become the world's largest seller of smartphones, according to data released Friday by market research firm Strategy Analytics. Samsung sold 27.8 million smartphones while Apple shipped 17.1 million and Finland's Nokia sold 16.8 million, it said. The Korean firm's share of the smartphone market rose to 23.8 percent in the third quarter from 9.3 percent a year earlier, while Apple's market share fell to 14.6 percent from 17.4 percent, the research firm said in a statement. Nokia saw its share fall drastically to 14.4 percent from 32.7 percent. Strategy Analytics said Apple's growth during the third quarter was affected by consumers and operators awaiting the launch of the new iPhone 4S, volatile economic conditions and tougher competition from Samsung's Galaxy S2 model. Samsung said it expects sales of mobile devices to stay strong and flat-panel TV shipments to rise in the fourth quarter. But Yi cautioned that, in light of global economic uncertainty, "we cannot rule out the possibility of demand growth slowing compared to previous years." IBK Securities analyst Nam Tae-Hyun said however that fourth-quarter earnings are expected to be comparable to the third quarter, despite a seasonal spending increase including higher marketing costs. Smartphone sales would continue to lead the way and contributions from the display and chipmaking businesses would likely grow as they come off a bottom, he added. "Samsung's earnings tend to be weaker in the fourth quarter but this time that will not be the case," Nam said.
